Hi

We are a team of students in India working on a Baja vehicle.

We're building our wishbones using AISI 4130 (1" OD, 3mm wall thickness). These are to be welded onto a ball-joint sleeve (2" OD, 6mm wall thickness, 1" high) made from AISI 4140. The other ends are to be welded to bushing sleeves (1.5" OD, 4mm wall thickness) also made from 4140.

Can someone please advise us on the preheat and the stress relief temperature range, times, recommended fillers, etc as our welder is not sure about the same (TIG is somewhat new to us).

Also, how would these change if the sleeves were made from mild steel rather than 4140? Is it even advisable to weld mild steel on 4130? We were also wondering if it's a good idea to weld mild steel shock mount tabs (~1/4" thick) on these wishbones. Please help!
