Hello -
New to the forum and was wondering if anyone was familiar with precision laser welding. I'm asking because am thinking about starting a business to provide precision laser welding services. My hesitation is i have no idea the potential market size. I would need to keep the machine busy ! I currently have a CNC mill and a 1000 watt laser. I can weld 0.25mm sheets together with no warpage. Also have round work capabilities. Thanks for any repsonse ! :)

I think you have a good idea-I was thinking the same thing. Laser welding lends itself to mold and die repair perfectly. I work in the mold business , and I repair weld on mold steels-but what these laser machines can do is light years beyond what I can do with a tig welder-- like putting .005 on a damaged corner, accurately, without even heating the block! Lasers will replace tig for this type of welding.

Thanks for the replies. It's a custom machine. I removed the spindle on a brand new Haas Mill and replaced it with laser optics. Connected a cable to the laser and I use special M-Codes to call up a laser program, turn the beam on and off and turn on cover gas. It was interesting getting the Haas to run with the spindle and tool changer off - error codes galore !
The heat affected zone is very small - you can weld the hell out of something and as soon as the beam turns off you can touch the part. It is difficult however to add filler metal - it is possible though.

Wow, that had to be a fun project! And you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor, good luck!

We do laser as well as micro tig. Mostly for mold repair and some fab. work. What kind of questions did you have?

Thanks
